Botulinum toxin reduces wrinkles due to muscle movement; it does not reduce lines due to volume loss, sun damage or skin roughness, nor does it help for acne scars, uneven pigmentation or skin spots.
Injections must be done by a physician. Small amounts are injected under the skin in the affected area. As the muscle relaxes, the wrinkles improve over the next few days. Typically the effects last for an average of 3 months, after which the muscles regain mobility, hence most patients undergo additional treatments.
Botulinum toxin is relatively safe. Occasionally the effects can be excessive and problems such as eyelid droop or tearing can develop, but this is only temporary. Some bruising and occasional headaches may be experienced for a few days after the injection.
