Heavy sweating can have causes that aren't due to underlying disease. Examples include intense exercise, being in a hot environment or spending time in a sauna. Excessive sweating can be a warning sign of thyroid problems, diabetes or infection. Sweating is also more common in people who are overweight or out of shape.
Localized hyperhidrosis only affects specific parts of the body, such as the underarms, groin, head, face, hands, or feet. Symptoms also tend to be symmetrical, occurring on both sides equally.
Injections of Botulinum Toxin (Botox® or Dysport®) can temporarily stop the nerves from triggering excessive sweating. It is approved for treatment of excessive underarm sweating, but can also be done for sweaty hands and feet.
